Color Me Impressed
I'd heard of this project a while back but didn't think much about it until I saw these teasers.
This may be the perfect companion to Jim Walsh's book All Over But The Shouting.
Or even better.

One More Holiday Song
I Wish It Was Christmas Today - Julian Casablancas
My favorite song of this holiday season was last year's I Wish It Was Christmas Today by Julian Casablancas.
It's a cover of a Saturday Night Live bit that sounds like it could be an outtake from The Strokes' first album.

The Torture Never Stops
Frank Zappa's The Torture Never Stops DVD is now available in general release. Previously it could only be ordered at the Zappa website. I went for it a couple years ago but it was sold out at the time. The film is made from a couple of NYC Halloween concerts that were originally shown on MTV. I remember seeing this at a friends house and being insanely jealous because I DIDN'T HAVE CABLE YET. This is a treat for fans of late 70's /early 80's Zappa, so if you think You Are What You Is is the GREAT CONCEPT ALBUM THAT I DO then this DVD is for you. Not a lot of oldies here (a nice version of Montana) but mostly IT'S THE NEWER STUFF! Zappa plays the perfect singer/emcee/conducter here with a few extended guitar breaks. The band is an equal mixture of humour and chops, especially notable is Steve Vai on guitar and "vocals." MY ONLY COMPLAINT here is that it's HALLOWEEN NIGHT and GOBLIN GIRL didn't make the cut. I know they played it, it can readily be found on YouTube. My advice is: BUY THIS DISC! and for EXTRA BONUS TRACKS search the web.Sunday, November 14, 2010
Yesterday's News TODAY - Bush & West
George Bush does not hate "Conway" West
I don't usually follow this sort of thing but why should Kanye West apologize to George Bush? If Bush thinks the Kanye incident was the worst moment in his presidency he better take another look. As for the Today show, they were trying to force Kanye's answers. I don't understand why they are still talking about this.

Sue and Lou

Much has been made of Susan Boyle's attempt to sing Lou Reed's Perfect Day on America's Got Talent.
She's from Scotland.
The song, however, will be appearing on her upcoming album Christmas Album
The Gift.
No, she will not be covering the Velvets song of the same name.
Perfect Day is the single and is now available for download at iTunes.

You Better Pawn It, Babe
The same week that Justin Bieber made his acting debut on CSI,
Bob Dylan made a surprise appearance on The History Channel's Pawn Stars.
An advanced move for sure.
Was this setup? Is Bob a big Pawn Stars fan or did the genius Chumlee really track him down? Spontaneous or staged, it made for some entertaining television.

The Doors Of Perception Are Closed
This film was supposed to be the antithesis of Oliver Stone's The Doors but every time I catch a glimpse of Morrison smiling or laughing and see a different side of his personality along comes Johnny Depp's narration to tell me what to think. The new footage is enough of a reason to watch this documentary but they still didn't get it right. Next time, if there is one, the filmmakers should take a cue from The Kids Are Alright and let the music (along with original interviews) do the talking. A full song performance would speak volumes over a Mr Mojo Risin segment (unfortunately, already told on Storytellers). The Doors songs are great. The spoken word, not so much.

Hark! The Fab Four Sing
I can't even count how many times I saw this in the Christmas Music bin and just passed it by. The cover looks like a cheap take-off of the Beatles 1 compilation but thanks to a tip from Mistletunes I'm now listening to the best Beatles parody/tribute since The Rutles and a great Christmas record to boot. This out of print album by Beatles tribute band The Fab Four along with the equal (if not better) followup Have Yourself A FABulous Little Christmas make up 20 Christmas Classics done in perfect Beatle style (from pop to psychedelia). The Fab Four offer a compilation of the two as Hark! on their own website. It seems to be sold out but if you look around the web you can may find a copy.Friday, December 25, 2009

Another Christmas Gift For You
The absolute favorite Christmas album around Philco headquarters this year is 2004's Another Christmas Gift For You by Chandler Travis and his Casual friends. It may be hard to find in your local record shop these days but iTunes and Amazon Digital have it for less than 10 bucks. Don't you just love a bargain?A free mp3 of If We Can Just Make It Through Christmas can be found here

Woodstock: 40 Year Yawn
I didn't buy the Woodstock original soundtrack album, it was always just there. Three record set, triple gatefold sleeve. it was an audio documentary and I worshiped it. Give me an F. It wasn't just the music it was what was between the songs. Stage Announcements!. Oh to have been there , I thought. The movie was even better, not that edited version they played on TV, but the one I saw at EM Loews. The speed kicking in during Soul Sacrifice. Marijuana Exhibit A. This was my high school education., Joe Cocker my tie-dyed teacher. Breakfast in Bed for 400,000! I couldn't get enough. We're scared shitless! I'm Going Home! The Director's Cut on Laser Disc was interesting but it's hard to flip six sides in one sitting. Thirty years on (for me) the original soundtrack is lost and the laser disc player is busted. I don't watch or listen to Woodstock anymore. Didn't really even think about it, until now. New Director's Cuts with lost footage! Fifty dollar and up fringe covered Blu Ray 40th anniversary DVDs! A library of new books. Sounds tempting. Nope. Peace might sell but I ain't buying. Does anyone who wasn't there care anymore? I tried to watch it on HDTV the other night and the magic wasn't there. Am I too old or is it just old news? It might still a great documentary but it played better back in the day when bands were still a mystery and every bit of live footage of your favorite band wasn't available at the click of a mouse. I'd still like to see that lost Creedence footage in high quality though.. Forget it, I'm going to put on my We're Only In It For the Money T-shirt instead.
